“Appeasement”

Part Two
After reading the first part of this
article some questions might arise:
“How did we arrive at
such a sorry state of affairs in the Catholic Church?” and
“When did all this
start?”
It is obvious that the “reform” [another buzzword] of Vatican II
created more problems than it solved, so before we can answer these two
questions, I have to stress the importance of those 1962-65 sessions in
bringing the “goods” of Vatican II to the world.
Since Vatican II, the Catholic Church has gone
through a few changes, not for the better, as I have described above, to
the point she is now beyond recognition for those who know what Catholic
means. The generation born in the 50’s, and so educated in the ‘60s and
since, would not know what the Church is, let alone her history,
doctrine and tradition – without some exceptional special grace
conferred on them directly by the Holy Spirit.
The Universal & Dynamic Church
The universality of the Catholic Church has always
been her inherent characteristic which, for two thousand years, had
distinguished her from other religions. From Jerusalem to Antioch, from
Corinth to Alexandria, from Thessalonica to Rome, even during very
‘stormy weather’, the Catholic Church has ultimately acted in a unique
and unitarian way whether on a theological, moral or disciplinary
level.
While the Apostles were still alive, with Peter as
the first of the Twelve, they formed, since Pentecost [Acts 2],
the inner circle of the expanding and dynamic Church. Thanks to
the Apostles and the Holy Spirit, the Church grew and spread to the four
corners of the earth. But after the last Apostle died, when disputes
arose over theological, moral, and disciplinary matters, the still young
Christian churches around the Roman Empire looked to Rome for the final
word. “Rome had spoken,” they would say. By the fourth century, Rome had
established itself as the centre of Christianity and the Bishop of Rome
had taken Peter’s chair, i.e. the Petrine authority. Thus was the Papacy
established as Catholic Tradition that all the bishops around the
world are united under their head, the Pope.
The Fish Rots From The Head
That was fine till Vatican II started changing
things from within, to the point where we must ask the unthinkable
questions,
“Is the Pope Catholic?”
“Were the preceding
conciliar Popes Catholic?”
Again there is no way we can answer those questions
adequately, or understand what is going on in Catholic Church, if we
don’t disclose the prime movers, the Elymas, the culprits for the
mess we are in.
‘The Jewish Question and the
Council’
What follows are excerpts from Vicomte Leon De
Poncins’ “Judaism and the Vatican”:
“On
the 19th November 1964, the bishops and cardinals of the
Catholic Church gathered in Council at Rome passed by an overwhelming
majority the Schema dealing with the attitude of the Church towards
Judaism” [page 9].
“The
truth, it is suggested, is that a number of Jewish organizations and
personalities are behind the reforms which were proposed at the Council
with a view to modifying the Church’s attitude and time-honoured
teaching about Judaism: Jules Isaac (my emphasis), Label Katz,
President of the B’nai B’rith, Nahum Goldman, President of the World
Jewish Congress,
etc” [p. 10].
‘Isaac turned the Council to advantage, having
found there considerable support among progressive bishops. In fact he
became the principal theorist and promoter of the campaign being waged
against the traditional teaching of the Church.
‘This
is the gist of his thesis: We must have done with anti-Semitism, the
logical outcome of
which the liquidation
of European Jews at Auschwitz and other death camps during the Second
World War.
According to him, the most dangerous form of anti-Semitism is Christian
anti-Semitism, which is fundamentally theological. Indeed, the Christian
attitude to Judaism has always been based on the account of the Passion
as described by the four Evangelists and as commented on by the Fathers
of the Church such as St. John Chrysostom, St. Ambrose, St. Augustine,
Pope Gregory the Great, St. Agobard, Primate of the Gauls, and many
others.” [p. 11]
“In
1949 he made contacts with the clergy in Rome, and through them he was
able to obtain a private audience with Pius XII, to whom he pleaded on
behalf of Judaism, asking him to have the “Ten Points of Seelisberg”
examined.
In
1959 he held a conference at Sorbonne on the need for revising Christian
teaching on the Jews and he closed with an appeal to Pope John’s sense
of justice and love and truth.
Shortly afterwards he met several prelates of the Roman Curia, in
particular Cardinal Tisserand, Jullie, Ottaviani, and Cardinal Bea
(my emphasis); and on the 13th June 1960 he was granted
an audience by the Pope, whom he asked to condemn the “teaching of
contempt”, suggesting that a sub-commission should be set up
specifically to study the problem.
Some
time afterwards Jules Isaac “learned with joy that his
suggestions had been considered by the Pope and handed on to Cardinal
Bea
for
examination”. The latter
set up a special working party to study relations between the Church
and Israel (my emphasis), which finally resulted in the Council vote
on the 20th November 1964.” [pp. 12-13]
~Condemn and suppress all
racial, religious or national discrimination with regard to the Jews;
~ Modify or suppress
liturgical prayers concerning the Jews, especially those on Good Friday;
~ Declare that the Jews are in no way responsible for the death of
Christ, for which the whole humanity is to blame;
~ Quash the passages, in
the Evangelists, and principally the one in St. Matthew, whom Jules
Isaac coldly describes as a liar and perverter of the truth, in which
they relate the crucial story of the Passion;
~ Declare that the Church
has always been to blame for this state of latent war which has
persisted for two thousands years between the Jews, the Christians and
the rest of the world;
~ Promise that the Church
will definitely modify her attitude to a spirit of humility, contrition
and forgiveness with regard to the Jews, and that she will make every
effort to repair the wrongs that she has done them by rectifying and
purifying her traditional teaching according to the lines laid down by
Jules Isaac.
Notwithstanding the insolence of his ultimatum and of his virulent
indictment
of the Evangelists and of
the teaching of the Fathers of the Church, which is founded on the very
words of Christ himself, Jules Isaac received strong support from
priests even in Rome and from many members of Amitie’ judeo-chretienne.”

Collegiality: We might think that
the word ‘collegiality’ is new, because before Vatican II hardly
was ever mentioned it. Catholic Encyclopaedia (pages 230-231)
says: “A broad term that
describes the exercise of the authority in the Church. The
fundamental teaching and governing authority, ordered to the
building up of the Body of Christy and ultimately the salvation
of the members of the Church, has been handed down from the
Apostles. The Apostles did not act in isolation as they
continued the mission of Christ, but rather as one body, even
though they
might have been geographically separated. They formed one
college with St. Peter as their head. In the most fundamental
sense, collegiality means
the working
together to
promote the
mission of the Church. It
does not mean that
all have equal authority with regard to ecclesiastical offices
held.
In the strict
sense, collegiality describes the manner in which the body of
bishops in communion with the Church, together with the Pope,
exercises its power. It does so solemnly when the concept
bishops gather in ecumenical council acting in union with the
successor of Peter (cf. LG, nn.23; 25). The bishops also act in
a collegial manner when they exercise their responsibilities
while dispersed throughout the world. The concept of
collegiality means that the bishops do not function as vicars or
representatives of Pope. Rather, they act as representatives of
Christ in their dioceses. Because the Lord named Peter to be the
head of the Church, the bishops act collegially only when doing
so together with the successor of Peter.
